Senior Maria Benitez, junior Alissa Salazar, and junior Andrea Garnica help the Easter Bunny get dressed before FBLA’s Easter egg hunt on April 15 at Memorial Park. FBLA put on the hunt to engage children from Bruce Transitional Housing.

Wenatchee High School’s FBLA club hosted an Easter egg hunt on April 15 for children currently in the Bruce Transitional Housing, an in-between system for families who are transitioning from homelessness to housing.

“It’s a community outreach,” FBLA adviser and Beginning Computer Apps teacher Susan Sears said. “In the fall we have a pumpkin carving event before Halloween [for kids in the Bruce Transitional Housing] and in the spring we have a [WHS] student dress as the Easter bunny and we all set up an Easter egg hunt.”

“The kids don’t really have opportunities from their parents, they’re limited,” junior and FBLA member Teresa Bendito said. “Having fun is something every child should have, no matter the situation.”

Students helped in the planning, preparation, and execution of the event, participating together with stuffing Easter eggs with candy.

“We planned on using the Easter egg hunt to invite new people or bring in new members by showing them the kind of fundraisers we hold,” sophomore and FBLA member Israel Sixto said.

The Easter egg hunt was a success with 10 to 15 kids attending. Children who could not participate due to illness were given candy as well in the spirit of the holiday.

“Seeing the excitement on the kids faces, watching them look for eggs and getting pictures with the Easter bunny was the best part,” Sears said. “The FBLA does a lot of different things. We do business, we compete at state, but we also do community service and give back.”
