The varsity girls varsity basketball team held their home opener Saturday Dec. 13, against the Sunnyside Grizzlies. While they left the court with a loss, the coach and players see promise for the upcoming season.
“I thought the team performed exceptionally well. They adjusted to a few key changes that we hadn’t gone over and so them being able to switch like that was awesome to see. It shows how much they’ve grown,” said head coach Rachel Lippert.
The team has been putting in work on and off the court during their preseason, leading to improvements and great plays from the players.
“We had quite a few [standout players], Karsyn [Garcia], she drives to the basket. She’s one of those all round utility players who can do it all. We have Rylee [Jones], she fouled out in the fourth quarter, but the thing about Rylee is when she gets in the paint, she is getting the board, she’s working the two. Having that inside out game is incredible to have. We also had Kamryn Garcia, she adjusted. We put her on their main shooter and she shut her down. There was a whole quarter where she didn’t even get any points because Kam was really working hard,” said Lippert.
The varsity team is looking to continue on with a positive attitude for the remainder of the season and take as many wins as they can get.
“I feel like we have a really strong start to the season compared to last year and we just need to build off of that,” said senior Karsyn Garcia. “I wanna win a few league games and then I think we just need to fix a few things and we can do that.”
The team has had a good start to their season and will continue their improvements in their next game, on Jan. 9 against IKE.
Their next home game on Jan. 13 against Othello.
