The Wenatchee High School girls lacrosse team, four points shy of victory against Nathan Hale on March 18, delivered a 21-3 win against Spanaway Lake in its first home game on March 22.

“The game [against Nathan Hale] was close. At halftime the other team was only up by one, but it got away from us at the end,” Coach Bruce Hale said. Hale also noted that missing 12 varsity starters for their first league game greatly affected the outcome.

The team has had to deal with losing valuable players to graduation last year as well.

“We lost six seniors last year, and they were all team leaders. We also lost really good defense girls, so most of the defense is new and it’s really hard to learn quickly and be thrown into the game… but [we won] because our offense was better, our plays and transitions were good, and our defense talked more,” junior Taylor Butcherite said.

Butcherite has led the team as attack, scoring 23 goals over the past three games. “She’s a superstar. She scored 12 goals in our last game alone,” Hale said.

The team’s league record is 1-1. Wenatchee lost in a non-league match in Enumclaw, 17-10, against Lake Tapps on March 15 for an overall season record of 1-2.

On April 10, the team will have its next game against Garfield in Seattle. The next home game will be on April 12 against Tahoma at WestSide High School at 2 p.m.
