Wenatchee High School’s production of Hairspray received two nominations, three honorable mentions, and one student achievement award in the 5th Avenue High School Theatre Awards, which were announced Tuesday.

Hairspray hit the stage in November at WHS. This is the 12th year that the 5th Avenue Awards have been around, and the fifth year in a row that a WHS production has been nominated for awards.

“I feel awesome about [the nominations],” WHS Choral Director Dawn McCormick said. “This was the first year we had an all-student orchestra pit, and they got an Honorable Mention.”

The nominations received were for outstanding performance by a chorus and outstanding lobby display, which will be announced at the awards ceremony. The honorable mentions were for the outstanding orchestra, outstanding stage crew, and outstanding lighting design. Senior Bryce Newberry will receive a student achievement award at the ceremony, honoring his work in the musical through the role of student director.

The choral department will take 47 students and crew members to Seattle on June 8 to watch the awards ceremony. Seniors Maddy Atwood and Alex Stroming will go to Seattle earlier that day for a dress rehearsal, as they will participate in the opening number with students from many other Washington high schools.

“I am really excited to go. It’s always a really fun experience and a good bonding time,” Stroming said.

Even though this will be Stroming’s last time going to the awards ceremony, she is still happy with her last year, and is excited for the group of kids for next year.

“It makes me sad, but I feel like the future of drama is still in good hands,” Stroming said.
