Honor Society fills stockings for families in need

The Wenatchee High School Honor Society and Family and Consumer Science teamed up to create stockings for Haven of Hope, a women and children’s shelter in Wenatchee. Students in the Family and Consumer Science class sewed 33 stocking which were filled with gift items collected by the WHS Honor Society who will also deliver them.
This is the second year the Honor Society has put together stockings, though this is the first year the Family and Consumer Science class has been involved. Members of Honor Society bring in basic hygiene and winter necessities, like toothbrushes, gloves and hats, in addition to toys and games. A stocking will be delivered to each of the children currently living at Haven of Hope, whose ages range from 8 months to 12 years old. They live with their mothers at the shelter, the majority of which cannot afford holiday gifts for their children. The stockings help the mothers celebrate with their children without adding more financial strain.
The idea was originally generated when Honor Society adviser Mary Symonds suggested that the society take on a project to help Haven of Hope. Honor Society officers senior Hadassah Lurbur, senior Sammy Arredondo, senior Sophia Dillon, junior Mackenzie Brown and junior Gavin Corrigan then deliberated and decided to fill stockings for the kids.
The stockings will be delivered before Christmas.
“We now want to make this an annual tradition and not do this project just for this year,” Symonds said.
