Friday night, and 40 carloads of high schoolers were back at school. Lounging in lawn chairs in pickup truck beds, wrapped up in blankets in the back of vans with the classic movie staples of candy, popcorn, and Dutch Bros., kids braved the spattering of rain that fell while waiting for dusk. ASB students directed cars to open slots and people to the taco truck and concession stand. As soon as it was dark enough, the rain stopped and the movies started.

The second Drive-In, put on by ASB, featured the old cartoon version of Alice in Wonderland and Divergent, ending around 1:30 a.m.

For sophomore Taylor McVicker, her night ended with Assistant Principal Dave Perkins having to jump start her car.

“It was fun,” McVicker said. “[I like] being able to pile a bunch of cool people in the back of a truck with a ton of blankets.”

“I thought it was a fun way to spend the night before Prom,” 2015-16 ASB Vice President and junior Ethan Knutson said. “It should continue because it was a good opportunity to do something enjoyable we can’t do in the community anymore.”

This year, the Drive-In made about $616. The money came from the $20 or $14 fee per car, depending on if you had Prom tickets, and 25 percent share of the concession money. The profits will go to ASB activities.

The screen cost $1,200 to rent, and the movies cost $600, according to sophomore class president and Drive-In coordinator Alex Sinay-Smith. The generator was donated, and the sound playing over 107.9 FM was donated by KWCC-TV.
