Soccer team makes WHS history by reaching State

The Wenatchee High School varsity girls soccer team moved on to State for the first time in WHS history after beating Eastmont High School 2-1 in double overtime on Nov. 5.

The girls soccer season ended its first playoff game, losing to Camas 4-0 on Nov. 13.

“We had a long trip, but we came out and played [Camas] really well,” Coach John Springer said. “The better team won the game, but I was really proud of the girls’ effort.”

The four goals scored on the Panthers came off of three corner kicks and one free kick by Camas.

“Making it to State was an accomplishment in itself, but beating Eastmont to get there was something else,” said senior Katie Cordes, defender for the WHS varsity soccer team.

The Panthers answered the first goal of the game made by the Wildcats eight minutes later with a goal made by senior Olivia Doerr, then another by senior Emily Rader in the second overtime, with junior Kate Thies assisting both goals. The match was the third time in row the Panthers had beaten EHS.

On top of beating Eastmont to move on to State, the WHS girls soccer team was awarded as the 4A Academic State Champions honor with an average GPA of 3.817. Rader also demolished the previous goals in a single season record with 14 goals, overwhelming the previous record of seven.
