Imagine being responsible for not only teaching classes at Wenatchee High School, but also teaching college-level courses in the high school through Central Washington University and teaching at Wenatchee Valley College. In the WHS math department, Flora London has been doing all of these tasks.

London’s journey of working at WVC began when she was in college at CWU, obtaining her bachelor’s degree in education. CWU was aware that London attended their university, and asked her to teach at their satellite program at WVC. This is their teaching preparation program, where London gets the opportunity to teach future teachers how to teach mathematics. She has been doing this for eight years now as a separate job from teaching at WHS.

Inside the high school, London also has the priorities of teaching Geometry, Pre-Calculus (which is part of the college preparatory program), and Advanced Placement Statistics, which also offers college credit. Not only did London have to undergo the process of teaching Pre-Calculus one and two through CWU, but she also had to go through an additional process to teach statistics at the advanced placement level. Between teaching at these various levels, London enjoys it all.

“I really like math, and teaching at a higher level where kids are there by choice,” London said. “I love teaching algebra and geometry for kids that might need extra support as well, but I think it’s nice getting to teach a little bit of geometry and algebra, but also teach math at the level where the kids are excited to be there.”

With different processes, there is a possibility of having to deal with some ups and downs. In this case, test-taking at the college level differs from testing at the high school level.

“We found out that the math department at Central is very strict compared to their other departments. They give us the finals that we have to give to the kids, so having to get the kids ready for a final that I wasn’t a part of writing was sort of challenging.” London Said.

London shows that she is able to manage these college test-taking occurrences by finding methods to prepare students that might differ if she were able to write the tests.

London’s experience with the high school and college level will allow more and more students at WHS and CWU to learn math at the level they desire to be at.
