On Sept. 18 President Donald Trump signed two executive orders in hopes to cut down taxes and pay off debt.
Trump introduced what he dubs a “Gold Card.” These cards give skilled foreign workers who are willing to pay a premium of 1 million dollars to come and work in the United States. Companies also have this ability to pay for their workers to be given workers visas, but instead it will cost the corporation 2 million dollars. This visa lasts a lifetime.
Trump also announced he plans to implement a one-year visa, costing 100 thousand dollars as opposed to the much larger, million dollar lifetime visas that will be offered.
President Trump claims that this program will raise more than $100 billion, according to NPR news. The program, as mentioned previously, is meant to raise money to cut taxes and pay debt, but it also stands to benefit and encourage companies to hire workers from the United States.
“Either the person is very valuable to the company and America, or they’re going to depart and the company is going to hire an American,” Howard Lutnick stated.
Also happening in early September, a strong social media movement turned into an overthrow of Nepal’s prime minister, Sharma Oli.
“Tens of thousands of people pour[ing] onto the streets to vent their fury,” CNN stated about the protests. During the protests, the parliamentary building of Nepal burned and 74 people lost their lives. The protests stemmed from a banning of social media and widespread corruption within the country.
The average income for a Nepali citizen is $1400 and before the height of the protests, what the general population dubbed “Nepo Kids” or children of political figures publicly displayed their wealth on social media. This sparked at least a portion of the anger directed towards the corruption.
Following the overthrow, Sushila Karki was named Prime Minister of Nepal and is the first female prime minister in Nepal’s history.
Last, but not least, the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s Jimmy Kimmel! Live, which began on Sept. 17 and ended Sept. 23, brought heavy debate to the topic of free speech.
President Trump’s administration has made a point of instilling free speech. On his first day back in office, Trump signed Executive Order 14149 to “stop all government censorship,” saying that censorship of any kind was “intolerable in a free society”.
Many have since argued that Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension was hypocritical of the President’s initiative to stop all government censorship, claiming that the decision was made to “appease the administration” because they “needed to approve Paramount’s merger with Skydance,” CNN stated.
Kimmel’s show was suspended due to comments criticizing the right-wing handling and reaction to the assassination of right-wing political figure Charlie Kirk.
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” was supposedly the comment that got Kimmel’s show banned.
