An audience of about 400 people attended the Wenatchee High School choir’s Pops concert on May 21 in the WHS auditorium. Many choir members believe the concert’s song lineup of popular Disney songs and pop songs made the concert an improvement from last year’s Spring concert.

“[Last year’s concert] was the most boring concert ever. It was a lot stricter, and all of the songs were boring,” chamber singer sophomore Tony Smith said “The Pops concert was definitely an improvement from last year.”

Saturday Night Live skit parodies were performed by choir members between performances and snacks were made available to audience members.

“[The Pops concert] was more of a show than a choir concert,” Smith said.

The WHS choir also participated in the Wenatchee School District arts festival on May 28. Choir, band, and orchestra groups from WHS, as well as groups from Elementary and Middle schools also participated.

This is the first full year WHS choir director Dawn McCormick has taught choir at WHS after transferring from Cashmere High School.

“It’s been a crazy year, but I think it’s gone pretty good,” McCormick said. “I think [my students and I] are starting to know each other.”

McCormick plans to have a jazz choir class for the 2014-15 school year.

“[I want jazz choir as a class] because it’s a different genre to get these kids exposed to, other than the concert choir setting,” McCormick said.
