Debate team places high in Coeur d’Alene

Wenatchee Speech and Debate Club placed fifth in a competition in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on Dec. 14.

The club competed against 16 other teams, mostly large schools from the Spokane area, with what adviser Dave Carlson called a “small but strong squad” of nine competitors. They came out with several individual trophies and top finishers.

Junior Wallace O’Donnell placed second in novice extemporaneous, first in novice congress and third in novice interpretive reading. Freshman Vivian Noyd placed first in novice extemporaneous and second place in novice editorial commentary. Junior Kiana Wilson placed third in open interpretive reading and third in open impromptu. Sophomore Abby Davison was a finalist in open humorous interpretation. Juniors Serena Fitzgerald and Ashley Techavimol were finalist in open duo.

The debate team will travel to Gonzaga University for their select competition on Jan. 3.
