If you have a license you know the struggle of our high school parking lot. The amount of parking spots is clearly not enough and it’s like a zoo. I’m sick and tired of getting cut off by the sophomores who just got their license or the students that think it’s okay to go 45 down the lanes or the one that makes me the most mad. Backing up when you don’t check your surroundings and especially when your cars back up camera is beeping at you because you’re about to hit people. It’s ridiculous the amount of stupidity in one parking lot. It is one of the most dangerous areas to have a car or be a pedestrian.
Another thing that irritates me is how people don’t understand that there are 2 lanes to pull into the parking lot. One lane on the left and one on the right. You don’t need to swing it all the way around and slow down traffic just to pull in. Also, when someone has their blinker on to pull into a spot, don’t be a jackwagon and steal the spot. That’s just rude.
My personal favorite rage bait, the drop off line. The drop off line for parents, guardians, grandparents or siblings dropping the student off is the one closest to the school. I understand that it’s long and can take a long time, especially when it’s close to 8:30 but the second lane of parking is not a drop off lane. It is needed for students to park. Every single day I sit and wait forever for the parents who don’t want to go through the line to make their own line. I can get behind the idea and make it go quicker but it doesn’t, it takes just the same or more amount of time. I have been late multiple times due to waiting for a parking spot because Jessica didn’t want to go through the drop off line with Timmy.
Another thing that needs to be addressed is that the layout of the parking lot in general is annoying, we only have two entrances and three exits. We need to create another entrance and exit in order to maintain a flowing system. The high school holds about 500 students with about 250 parents wanting to get their drop off and pick up their kid everyday until they get their license. The line can’t hold that many people nor the amount of parking spots doesn’t have enough space. It genuinely isn’t a safe space for pedestrians, students, bikers, or drivers. Just the other day I was backing out of my parking spot and I was there first, two cars from the opposite direction were impatiently waiting for me and then I proceeded to back up a little more and through the tiniest sliver they sped up and raced past me. If they would’ve waited 15 more seconds for me to go in drive and pull forward, both of them would be able to drive down the lane and exit for lunch. I understand that we have a quick lunch but speeding past and being dangerous isn’t the way to go about nor the best option.
For WHS I think the best option to accommodate is take out the old run down tennis courts that no one uses. There is a staff parking lot on the left side of the building that the PE teachers use and if we extend that and make it a separate parking lot it would free up some of the traffic on the ASB side. The next extension would be taking out the bus ramp. The bus barn is on the right side of the school and the buses could pull in and the student could walk up to the school. The parking lot would go all the way down where the grass hill is and then up the left and put another entrance and exit up by where the staff parking lot one is. I know that it is just a dream but the safety of students in a car, walking in the lot or riding their bike or skateboard matter way more. Someone needs to take action before something terrible happens.
