Starting off in the 2000s when the first Iphone was made, it used a charger called a 30-pin but it’s mostly called a dock connector now some people don’t have a clue to what that kind of charger that even is, but if you have an older sibling you might have seen them have it when they were teenagers in the 2000s at least for me I have had and still have this charger somewhere in my house. Well, essentially a dock connector had a wide connector and was a pretty weird looking charger but also really cool because if you had both an ipod, ipod touch and the first iphone their was this speaker that was iconic called the Bose sounddock that you can plug one of them in the middle and pick the songs you downloaded then simply play the bangers you had downloaded.
On Sept. 12 2012, Apple announced a new charger called the lightning connector alongside the new iphone 5, with this new charger as said “was designed to be 80% smaller and reversible.” The reason for this change was because the dock connector was just too large for the thin devices they made which prompted the change for the charger. Now with this I would say it is a big change just by the way this charger was used for over a decade a lot of people have gotten used to this charger.
Now, who would’ve thought that they would change the charger again, when the Iphone 15 came out in 2023 this is when the switch to USB-C came to light. Many people were really frustrated with Apple because usually when Apple cared about us they would include the charger in the box so it wasn’t such a big deal back then, but now you had to buy a whole new charger for a phone thus it was also becoming a waste. It’s also really annoying having to ask someone for a charger and then they hand you the USB-C charger like really. Now you have to say “do you have the old charger,” and it’s the end of the world because either they threw it away or they do have it but it’s in the worst condition with wires sticking out.
Allegedly there will be a new charger with the new Iphone 18 coming out but has not been confirmed, but if it’s true it just adds to the annoyance of buying a new charger.
