Knowledge Bowl puts their smarts to the test

The Wenatchee High School Knowledge Bowl Team is entering their 2015 season in full swing. So far, they have competed in three tournaments, with WHS’s top team finishing in the top eight at each competition.

The team’s last competition was held on Monday, Jan. 11, at Wenatchee High School. Both of the Wenatchee teams that competed ended their day with two wins and one second place finish.

“Even though our teams finished sixth and ninth out of 30 teams, a better way to tell how well we did is by our wins and losses,” said adviser Chris Cloke, noting that during home events he frequently places his teams in more competitive groups. “Scoring higher against tougher opponents is a greater achievement than having a weak schedule and finishing with a higher ranking.”

Knowledge Bowl is an event where teams pit their academically-themed trivia knowledge against each other in a fast-paced, timed tournament.

Junior Hendrik Keyser, along with seniors Charles Marshall and John Kottkamp made up Wenatchee No. 1 in Monday’s tournament.

“We are still taking these first few competitions to set our lineups,” Cloke said. “Most teams will consist of four to six students, but at this point we are just trying out different group together.”

Knowledge Bowl’s next competition will be Wednesday, Jan. 20, in Soap Lake. They will compete in a total of seven regular season tournaments. Regionals will be held on Monday, Feb. 22, in Wenatchee.
