On Monday, a flowing musical note mural covered this wall to the music wing. On Tuesday, it was gone. Fresh paint is coming to the music department this summer.

Walking into the music hall, the beautiful music notes that are painted on the wall are admired by many. But, not anymore — that wall is now white.

On May 11, the music department met with Dean of Students BJ Kuntz to discuss fixes that are needed in the music hall. One of the decisions made was to paint over the mural that wrapped around the wall leading into the music hall. Those sitting in on the meeting were Choir Director Dawn McCormick, Orchestra Director Beth Jensen, Band Director Jim Kovach and Mariachi Director Ramon Rivera.

“We are just trying to keep things up to date as much as possible,” McCormick said. “One of the things we talked about was painting all the way through the music department and we do have some murals that were painted years ago by students and we just had a discussion to keep it, it would be easier obviously to paint over it than to try to mask it off and keep it.”

The mural, a musical staff decorated with different colors and music notes, was painted by Wenatchee High School graduate Bill Bugert in 2008.

Although nothing has been decided on yet, students who are involved in the music department can submit suggested designs to the music directors by June 1 to be considered for wall art.

“I’m going to miss them [the music notes],” Jensen said. “What we are going to do is have students present design ideas and we are trying to make it into something positive.”

The new white walls have left some students disappointed that the music notes are gone.

“I liked [the music notes], and they were pretty,” junior Dawson White said. “They didn’t give us enough time to have a say in it.”

Even though the decision came as a shock to some people, there are students who remain optimistic and have high hopes for what comes next.

“If there is going to be a new design, I think it will be cool to see what the outcome will be,” sophomore Dillon Bair said.
