Panther sports break records; Athletic Director weighs in

In the past week, Wenatchee High School sent swimming, football, cross country, soccer, and volleyball to State. It is the first year in WHS history that all sports teams have moved on to compete at State.

The last time the football team progressed to the second level of state was 1979, according to Athletic Director BJ Kuntz. The WHS football team is now among the top eight teams in the state, and if the Panthers win this coming Saturday’s game against Chiawana in the Apple Bowl at 1 p.m., they will be in the top four and move on to the third level of state.

Girls swimming finished second in the State in last weekend’s competition, which is the highest finish for the Panther swimmers in WHS history.

The girls soccer team went to the first round of State last weekend, but lost the first game, thus ending the season. However, the Panthers are the academic state champs and will go to the state awards ceremony to pick up their award. Being the academic state champ means that the 18 girls that make up the team have the highest combined GPA out of all competing teams, which was 3.817.

The girls volleyball team played in the State tournament last weekend as well, but lost two straight matches.

When asked what contributed to so much success in this year’s fall sports, Kuntz said that we’re just “awesome.”

“It really is a little bit of everything,” Kuntz said. “We have a big school with a lot of talented kids and some really solid coaching. All of that has been in our favor during competitions this year.”
