Reddit: the Internet’s newest social site

The monotony of public education can be a real drag sometimes. Five straight days of chair-slouching through seven hours of classes just to traipse home and chip away at your homework… maybe go to practice, just for some brownie points with coach – whatever. But sooner or later, Friday afternoon decides it finally wants to show its face. You get home and flop on your bed like a sumo wrestler off the world’s highest diving board. Social interaction is way too demanding of a task after this week. The basement couch is looking way too welcoming to pass up tonight… but what to do? You sigh as you contemplate watching your favorite TV series on Netflix again, despite having seen every episode eight times already.

But do not fret! I have an even better idea! Fire up your preferred Internet accessible device, punch in www.reddit.com, and give your newest addiction a warm welcome. Reddit will swiftly burrow its way into your cortex as it satisfies your voracious appetite for information and entertainment. After your first visit you’ll be hooked, and you’ll enjoy every second of it.

To put it in simple terms, Reddit is basically a website comprised of thousands of sections (called subreddits) ranging over a wide array of subjects to satisfy anyone’s unique interests, no matter how strange. Want to tell the world of the ingenious idea you had in the shower this morning? In the mood for flipping through countless pictures of some guy named Ian sleeping?  Then you’re in luck, because I’ve found just the place you’re looking for!

This goldmine of pictures, videos or just plain old text is truly the world’s greatest time waster. It’s hard not to let your curiosity get the best of you with seemingly limitless content on virtually every topic imaginable. Because of this, Reddit can be a bit overwhelming at first. However, in my time spent on this site, (more time than I’d like to admit) I have compiled a few of the best, most intriguing sections to occupy now-more-than-ever valuable free time.

 1. Pics

“Pics” is one of the largest sections on all of Reddit. Here you’ll find some of the most fascinating, compelling, amazing pictures on the Internet. From photos of a lost, thousand year-old Egyptian city discovered at the bottom of the ocean to the candid shot of a young boy’s indescribably stupefied face as he hears for the first time in his life, this section never ceases to amaze.

2. Dad Jokes

Dads are notorious for their uncanny ability to induce a hide-your-face-in-embarrassment reaction at a horribly cheesy joke — a skill only acquired through old age. This subreddit is dedicated to those painful, yet, admittedly, pretty clever moments.

3. Standup Shots

Like stand-up comedians, but don’t have the attention span to watch an hour-long special? Then you’re like me, and “Standup Shots” may quickly become a staple of your daily Reddit diet. Humor, along with a surprising amount of astute wisdom, can be found in this extensive collection of jokes so eloquently delivered by professional comedians.

In closing, remember to use Reddit responsibly. Because as I well know, attempting to pry yourself away from the computer screen and go read A Tale of Two Cities like you’re supposed to be doing feels like an almost impossible task at times. But when managed properly, Reddit can be a great way to brighten your day if high school or anything else has you stressing.
