On Oct. 3, Taylor Swift released her 12th studio album, The Life Of A Show Girl.
As soon as the album dropped, I mean quite literally within 30 minutes, my Tik Tok for you page was filled with hate for the album. I quickly went to the comments to find some other opinions and people defending Swift’s music like they usually do. However, the comments were loaded with people who shared the same, if not worse hate for the new album.
While I certainly don’t think this was Swift’s best album, I definitely don’t think this level of hate is warranted.
From what I’ve seen, a lot of people are upset because Swift doesn’t share the same poetic “vibe” in The Life Of A Show Girl as she does in The Tortured Poets Department (her last album). Opinions have been shared that she is losing her lyrical touch and her music is going downhill.
I, however, disagree. A lot of Swift’s most lyrical and “deep” songs come from a time where Swift was not in a great place. This is shown in her music through a lot of sad songs and deep, sad, tragic meaning in her lyrics. While I love those songs, I am happy that Swift has grown away from that and has released a happy, sparkly album. Her new album shares a happier feeling and if fans are upset because they didn’t get a sad breakup album, they should be ashamed because a true fan wouldn’t wish unhappiness on someone they claim to love. This album shows that Swift is in a happy place in her life and fans should be happy for her.
With that being said, let’s get into the actual review.
The Fate Of Ophelia (10/10) – This is my favorite song on the album. It’s very upbeat and very catchy. While it does start off a little slow, it builds up fast and ultimately it’s just a good song.
Elizabeth Taylor (5/10) – This song reminds me of her album, Reputation. It’s not necessarily bad, but it’s not really my favorite. I do think the reference to the showgirl, Elizabeth Taylor was a great touch and the song is catchy, but not my cup of tea.
Opalite (10/10) – This is a very close second to my favorite. It is also very catchy and upbeat. For some reason it kind of reminds me of a Christmas song for some reason. I love the chorus and I think it’s my favorite one on the album.
Father Figure (6/10) – Overall, I like this song but some of the lyrics aren’t my favorite. For example “I can make deals with the devil because my d**k’s bigger” I’m not hating, but that definitely wouldn’t be my choice in words.
Eldest Daughter (4/10) – For track five, I was hoping this one would be a little better. But like Father Figure, I don’t love the lyrics in this one either. I’m not saying they should be sad or sorrowsome but I think they are a little too “woke”. My least favorite lyrics are “But i’m not a bad bitch – And this isn’t savage”.
Ruin the Friendship (7/10) – The song itself is good, I don’t have a lot of notes on that. But I do have to add that I think this song is about Jeffery Lang, who was a highschool friend of Swift’s and tragically died of overdose at the age of 21.
Actually Romantic (5/10) – This song is okay. That’s all I really have to say, it’s not the catchiest in my opinion but it’s not terrible.
Wi$h Li$t (7/10) – This song is catchy and I think that it portrays Swift’s wanting a life with her fiance, Travis Kelce, over material things like other stars.
Wood (2/10) – This song is a straight up mention to Travis’s special favors. No, thank you Taylor.
CANCELLED! (7/10) – I like this one. I think it’s pretty catchy and the lyrics are fine. I also think this one would fit on Reputation. Also, I think this song is a reference to Blake Lively. Lively is a friend of Swift’s and is a pretty controversial person to some.
Honey (6/10) – I like the beat to this one, I think it flows nicely, not much to add.
The Life Of A Show Girl (ft Sabrina Carpenter) (8/10) – I really like this song, I think both of their voices go really well together and the lyrics are good. Although it does remind me of “Cool” by the Jonas Brothers.
