The all famous Superbowl game and halftime show happens once a year and every single time the halftime show performers choose to either go big or go home. Spoiler alert; the choice is usually to go all out for the show. Although there are many average superbowl concerts, quite a few shows out did themselves.
After rewatching a handful or two of superbowl halftime shows in my mind there is a distinct top six. Starting off with some honorable mentions is Michael Jackson. He performed in 1993 and his intro was too tuff to not put him as an honorable mention. The main reason why he isn’t in the top six is because when he got down to the stage he didn’t sing or move for a minute straight and it ruined the aura his entrance brought. My second honorable mention is Lady Gaga. Her show was in 2017 and her entrance was also insane. She flew down from the top of the stadium and it was really cool until I heard someone say it reminded them of a mega church pastor and that immediately ruined it for me. Still honorable mention because it is THE Lady Gaga. My personal favorite honorable mention is Prince’s halftime show in 2007. He sang “Purple Rain” while it was pouring during the performance. Need I say anymore about this.
Now for my personal opinion of the top six for the superbowl halftime entertainment shows.
Ranked at number six is Coldplay. Honestly nothing too out of the ordinary but the crowd seemed pretty hype and excited for it so the energy was definitely there. Would have been put up higher on the list if he didn’t get nerfed with the sun still being up.
At number 5 is Katy Perry. This is a controversial take but the electronic animal she came in on honestly freaked me out. Bonus points for being Katy Perry and singing her bangers of course. Also a plus was her trying to dressing appropriate, I appreciate the effort to keep it family-friendly.
Moving on to number 4, Beyonce. She is always a great performer and her opening song choice of “Love on Top”then quickly moving into “Crazy in Love” was peak. Only negative was not very kid friendly choreography and she wasn’t even trying to hid that she was lip syncing.
Ranked 3 is Usher. Honestly no notes for his 2024 performance. The energy of the whole thing from the audience to him and the songs were peak. He brought the hype and slowed down with vocals so it really had everything.
Placed at second Rhianna. I have yet to see her have a bad performance. The songs and even the weird dancers had us all entertained. I also enjoyed the color scheme of the white and red outfits.
My controversial pick that took first is Kendrick Lamar. Had everyone talking about this performance for months after the superbowl. He knew he would get sued dissing Drake and he did it anyway. Samuel L. Jackson as Uncle Sam was perfect casting. Brought Serena Williams. Wore the A minor necklace. The whole thing was so messy and I love it.
