WHS senior will perform at Carnegie Hall

Standing up on a grand stage in New York City, surrounded by some of the top-notch vocalists in the United States. For many, this is just a dream, but for Wenatchee High School senior Alex Stroming, this will be a reality as she is set to participate with the National Honors Choir in Carnegie Hall Feb. 18-23.

WHS Choir Director Dawn McCormick will accompany her to NYC. She attended the event in 2012, and said she nominated Stroming to go because she fit the ideal model of a candidate.

“I wanted someone who’s interested in the musical field,” McCormick said. “You want someone who can sing the parts and someone who is a good citizen.”

McCormick said she knew Stroming would be somebody who’d represent herself and WHS well.

Stroming said she’s been singing ever since she was a child, as young as two-and-a-half years old. “I’m a huge musical nerd. The first one I saw was Cinderella,” she said. “My mom has these videos of me singing it around the house when I was really small. After I wouldn’t stop singing, my mom signed me up for voice lessons.”

Stroming is in the Hy-Tones chorus, Chamber Singers, and vocal jazz choirs. She is a self-described music nerd, or as McCormick affectionately said it, a music stud. According to her friend, senior Marnie Rimes, she even sings in her sleep.

I didn’t know how selective the program was so I was really happy once I found out.

The Honors Choir is selective, with only roughly 200 students attending every year. There are six to eight people attending from Washington state. The audition process for Stroming included her singing two classical songs.

“I didn’t really expect it to happen, but after school I was getting ready to go to Hairspray rehearsal then I checked my email and saw I was in, and I got really excited. It was really awesome,” she said.

“I didn’t know how selective the program was so I was really happy once I found out,” Stroming added.

Fellow WHS choir member, senior Devan McAllister, explained why Stroming is such an ideal candidate for the choir. “She’s a really hard worker. When she puts her mind to it, she can do anything.”
