Wish granted: Apple Bowl will be graduation location

Graduation will be taking place at the Apple Bowl, after deliberation by the Wenatchee School Board last night.

“We are planning on going full speed ahead with graduation at the Apple Bowl,” Assistant Superintendent Jon DeJong said.

However accommodations to the new turf field would have to be made. To protect the turf, an estimate of seven to $16,000 dollars would need to be spent to purchase a tarp that would cover the field, according to Wenatchee School Principal Eric Anderson. An additional $25,000 would also be spent on new “loop chairs” as another precaution.

“We want to make sure nothing is protruding into the turf,” senior class adviser Brandon Harle said.

A considerably large downside would include the restraint against high-heels on the turf, along with not being able to swarm the field and take photos with the newly graduates.

“There will be some restrictions on what girls can wear… that’s not only for the field, that’s for safety, period,” DeJong said. “We have contacts in districts who do this and are doing this. We are confident students will be cooperative and do what it takes to have the ceremony there.”

Harle said that the ceremony would take place at the Apple Bowl “rain or shine.”

Staff at Wenatchee High School conducted a survey to determine where the majority of seniors wanted to graduate.

“Approximately 90 percent of students decided they wanted to graduate at the Apple Bowl,” Harle said.
