WHS clubs making impact on community

Oct. 24 is quickly approaching, and many students from Wenatchee High School are planning their ways to make a difference. Various clubs and organizations from WHS will band together and enter the community with goals to improve the lives of others.

“On one day each year, we want to inspire the nation to make a difference. Make A Difference Day is the largest single-day of volunteering in the country. No matter who you are or where you’re from, everyone has the power to do something that improves the life of another. Whether it’s starting a project that helps one person, or working on one that benefits a whole community, every contribution makes a difference,” the Make a Difference Day mission statement reads.

One of the clubs representing Wenatchee High School on Make a Difference Day is WHS Key Club. This service-focused group of students will travel to Camp Zanika Lache in Lake Wenatchee and conduct a camp clean-up. They will work alongside Kiwanis International to clean up scattered trash, fallen tree branches, and perform many maintenance projects, according to Key Club adviser Diane Owen.

WHS Interact Club will also be in the community on Saturday, Oct. 24. In fact, they will be right across the street. The “youth version of Rotary Club” will be putting up a fence at the residence on the corner of South Miller Street and Millerdale Avenue, according to French teacher Jon Magnus.

“Kids walking to and from both the high school and Pioneer Middle School cut the corner and trample the family’s lawn,” Magnus said. “It’s something that can be fixed and we are glad to help.”

WHS Earth Club will also be making a difference on Oct. 24. This nature-friendly group will be joining the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust to clean up trails and prepare them for the winter ahead.

The WHS National Honor Society is bringing its members together to volunteer at the annual ski swap held at Orchard Middle School and they will be assisting in the construction of a park shelter in Walla Walla Point Park.

“Students will be playing a large part helping to run the ski swap and they will probably be helping with painting and cleanup down at Walla Walla Point Park,” Honor society adviser Mary Symonds said.

Wenatchee High School’s Golden Apple Band will be conducting a clothing drive called Clothes for A Cause. They will be collecting shoes, towels, linens, blankets, stuffed animals – anything fabric – at the WHS parking lot all day. They will then send the donated clothing to needy families throughout the community.

Many of these projects encourage anybody to join their efforts to help others. The Make a Difference Day organization strives to make it apparent that everyone can help, everyone can make a difference.
